Gorse and painted roofs of Stanley provide colour against the grey rock of Sapper Hill and Mount Tumbledown, Falkland Islands. Taken from RRS James Clark Ross at dawn on 9 November 2015 with Canon 7Dii and 100-400mm at 271 mm. Exposure was 1/125 sec at f/8.0; ISO 3200
25 December 2015 - Merry Christmas
Lola and I went out as soon as we woke, not even a cup of tea first. Unfortunately the full moon slid below the bank of cloud before we could get any shots. So we had to take the consolation of the developing sunrise before returning for our breakfast. Canon 7Dii and 100-400mm at 100 mm. Exposure was 1.6 sec at f/5.0; ISO 100
17 December 2015 - A southern fur seal pup looking over his sleeping mother on the beach in front of the BAS base at Bird Island, South Georgia
I have just returned from a trip to the Scotia Sea, taking in our base visits to Signy, Bird Island and King Edward Point, as well as undertaking our annual krill survey off South Georgia. Pictures from this trip should start arriving on the web site over the next couple of weeks. This picture was taken on the 29 November with 7Dii and 100-400mm at 400 mm. Exposure was 1/500 sec at f/5.6; ISO 160

9 August 2015: Sunlit ducks and reeds on the River Great Ouse
Yesterday Lola and I went to check out what was happening up at the river. The sunlight on the water sparkled around a group of ducks swimming upstream. Taken with Canon 7Dii and 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 at 400 mm. Exposure was 1/500 sec at f/11; ISO 160
8 August 2015 - Warsaw on display
With a 16 century old town 95% rebuilt after WWII, with newer buildings reflecting either the communist era or the more recent return to democracy, there is plenty to see and photograph in this fascinating city in Eastern Europe. The results from my visit to Warsaw in July 2015 can now be seen under 'Travel the World; Warsaw - Poland'.
Busy spring morning on Charles Bridge in Prague - 30 June 2015
Last month we spent a week in Prague and observed the different dawns over the Charles Bridge. This was one of the mornings when I decided that it would be worth looking elsewhere for something a little less copied. Hopefully my own pictures will start to appear under 'Travel the World' in the next week. Above photo taken with 5diii and 24-105 mm at 45 mm. Exposure was 0.6 sec at f/8; ISO 100 on tripod
10 May 2015 - Swans on River Great Ouse at sunrise
The new HDR merge in Lightroom CC is a chance to re-exam some earlier sets of bracketed exposures of sunrises. Here is one taken back in early April 2013 up at the River Great Ouse. Taken with Canon 5Diii and EF70-200 f/2.8 at 200 mm. Exposures were 1/160 - 1/4 sec at f/11; ISO 400
6 May 2015 - Rainy morning closeups
After day after day of early morning sunrises it was almost a relief to have a rainy morning and a chance to not worry about trying to catch the sunrise. Taken on my pre-breakfast walk with Lola last Sunday at 06:10 am with Canon 5Diii and 50 mm f/1.4. Exposure was 1/125 sec at f/2.0; ISO 100.
12 April 2015 - World map on building site hoarding, Busan, South Korea
Half way round the world from home and the map unsurprising looks a little different. Canon 5Diii and 24-105 mm f/4 at 40 mm. Exposure was 1/200 sec at f/9; ISO 100. Pictures from my trip in March 2015 to Busan are now loaded under 'Travel the World'.
2 April 2015 - Sunrise over Haven Oak
It's been sometime since Lola and I have been along the muddy bridleways before breakfast on a workday. However the change to BST and the fact that it is only half a day of work before we start the Easter holiday seems an appropriate day to carry the camera and check what is going on. Taken with Canon 5 Diii and 24-105 mm f/4 at 105 mm. Exposure was 1/160 sec at f/8; ISO 100.
Windy day at the rookery - 21 March 2015
Lola and I making good use of the lighter mornings to get out and about well before breakfast. The rooks seemed to be having a good time in the stiff breeze blowing along the river. Taken at the Washes on the River Great Ouse with Canon 5Diii and 24-105 mm at 105 mm. Exposure was 0.6 sec at f/22; ISO 100.
Reflection of City of London - 4 February 2015
Last Friday I went down to London and walked along the South bank near Southwark bridge. Through the gaps in the clouds, the setting sun was highlighting the City buildings on the north side of the river. At times creating intense highlights as it was reflected off glass and steel surfaces. Meanwhile in the shaded windows of South bank offices the view of happenings on the north bank was faithfully reflected together with ghostly images of what was happening within. Taken with Canon 5Diii and travelling light with just a 50 mm f/1.4 lens. Exposure was 1/50 sec at f/8; ISO 640
Signy sea ice - 26 January 2015
A set of photos from my most recent trip to the Antarctic - cruise JR304 on RRS James Clark Ross in November and December 2014 are starting to appear on the website finally. Keep your eyes open from additions to South Georgia, South Orkneys and It's only a job. Taken from ship at dawn while at Signy with Canon 5Diii and 17-40mm f/4 at 19 mm. Exposure was 1/50 sec at f/8.0; ISO 100
Flying home from the Antarctic - 20 December 2014
Towards the end of our 18 hour flight from the Falkland Islands, somewhere over northern Portugal the cresent moon still hangs over the pre-dawn clouds. Series of 4 photos taken through aircraft window with Canon 5Diii and 24-105 mm. Exposure was 1/6 sec at f/5.6; ISO 3200.

Supermoon August 2014 - 6
Closest supermoon for 20 years rises over the River Great Ouse near Flat Bridge Farm, Cambridgeshire. Taken with Canon 5Diii and EF70-200 mm f/2.8 at 200 mm. Exposure was 1/50 sec at f/4.5; ISO 400. A series of 7 photos taken just before and after sunset can be found in 'Our Fenland River' under 'Glorious Britain'.
Delicate spring sunrise
Grey cloud masks much of the sunrise over the nature reserve this weekend (06:25, 8 March 2014). Just the slightest hint of colour gives at least some reward for getting out of the house before we've even had a cup of tea. Tripod-mounted Canon 5Diii and 70-200 at 145 mm; exposure 1/125 sec at f/5.6; ISO 800.
The Haven Drove Oak - January 2014
This majestic oak is on one of our most popular dog walks so Lola and I see it in all kinds of weather. This picture was taken in the frosty weather last January - the sort of weather we have missed so far this year with the storms and floods. I used it this Christmas as one of my cards for the family and I think this oak will eventually form the focus for a new study that will be published under Glorious Britain. In the meantime, Happy New Year to all who see the photo.
30 November 2013 - Just waiting for the light
Last morning in November finds Lola and me up at the river again. The pattern of clouds promises a spectacular sunrise but it doesn't work out quite as I expected. See three other sunrise photos showing the changing light and cloud-scape in just a few moments. Available under 'Those sunrise moments' in Glorious Britain.
